Giving back gave me such a huge sense of purpose. I’m glowing for how far we’ve both come since May of 2012!
I just finished my 11th tutoring session with a retired Army First Sergeant, who suffered a stroke in May 2012 at the airport upon return from Afghanistan. I am reteaching him HOW to read. We started with the ABC’s and he was able to speak about 10 words total when we began just a few short months ago. Today, he is officially a READER again. I feel quite magical putting all my skills to practice and giving him this gift of reading back. First Sergeant stifled tears of joy. I AM SO PROUD OF HIM. He is the hardest worker I have ever met. We still have a ways to go, but he’s a reader now. More importantly, he speaks using coherent sentences, multisyllabic words strung together with more words, despite his aphasia. This is pure testimony to the fact that a highly qualified teacher with a hard working student can accomplish anything.
