Use Your Prior Knowledge to Improve Your Comprehension

Bringing to mind all the ideas and thoughts that you have about a given subject is called activating schema. All of the experiences you’ve ever had fill up a space in your brain that educators refer to as background knowledge, or schema. Using an anticipation guide encourages your brain to think about the ideas, themes, and relevant, or useful information, before you actually read. It’s powerful stuff.
